Course Detail: The course will study what the Archaeological remains of cities of Rome and Pompeii can tell us of public and private life. It will cover both the official political message of the great public buildings and also what private domestic architecture reveals about housing construction, decorations (including wall paintings and mosaics) and amenities. Other topics covered will be public entertainments (gladiators and chariot races) religion, street planning, shops, baths. The archaeological record will be supplemented by handouts of extracts from relevant ancient authors such as Tacitus, Pliny, Josephus, and Setonius.
